WHAT IS TOCANDO?
Tocando Music Project, a division of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, provides tuition-free strings and general music
education to students in the 3rd grade and above in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio Monday – Thursday from 4:00 – 5:30 pm
at the Family Resource Center of Guillen Middle School (900 S. Cotton St.) in El Paso, Texas. Our teachers work
collaboratively to provide our students and community with meaningful musical engagement. Students perform at least
8 times annually across El Paso. We presently provide regular lessons and sectionals, ensemble playing and singing
classes, percussion and general music instruction, chamber and advanced music learning, and a weekly class for
students with cognitive disabilities.
DUTIES
➔ Immediate:
◆ Co-teach string classes of up-to 18 students using method books and repertoire provided by the Director of Programs and Director of Pedagogy. Lead string sectionals of up-to 8 students.
◆ Create simple lesson plans and provide streamlined “daily debriefs” to teaching team including: daily grade, positive outcome, and areas for improvement
◆ Attend occasional paid professional development opportunities provided through Tocando Music Project (in person) or other professional organizations (online)
● Actively incorporate into classes the perspectives, strategies, language, routines, and pedagogical tools conveyed through Tocando professional development sessions.
◆ Attend and perform alongside students in all required concerts
◆ Possibly assist with monitoring students during breaks, transitions, and dismissal
QUALIFICATIONS
➔ Essential:
◆ Belief that all young people are capable, creative, and deserving of music education
◆ Curiosity and willingness to cooperate as a part of a teaching team focused on holistic, culturally responsive, well-scaffolded, music teaching
◆ Music Student or Graduate of a University School of Music (we may consider non-music students with a bowed string background and passion for education)
◆ Access to reliable transportation and ability to teach 1-4 days/week from 4:00 – 5:30 pm
◆ Punctual, organized, with great communication skills.

◆ Experience in a classroom with multiple students
◆ Conversationally bilingual (Spanish/English)
PAY SCALE
$15/hour starting pay – Hourly pay increases may be offered based on experience, job performance, and education.
Gas stipend available for employees traveling more than 30 miles one-way
